Medical Microdermabrasion: A Surprisingly Simple Way To Flawless Skin!

Wrinkle Free Skin with Microdermabrasion - South CarolinaToday I want to talk about a quick and easy mini-procedure to help rejuvenate your skin, lessen the signs of scaring, and remove fine lines and the effects of acne. So continue reading now as I describe for you how Medical Microdermabrasion (the lunchtime power peel), can help you look your best at every stage of life!

How Medical Microdermabrasion Is Performed?

With the use of small crystal like powder and vacuum pressure the top layer of dead skin (stratum corneum) is removed during treatment, while promoting the production of new cells in the deepest layer of skin.

Treatments last about 20 - 30 minutes if only the face is being treated, and can last up to an hour if the neck and upper chest are included. Courses of microdermabrasion consist of 4 - 8 treatments at 1 - 2 week intervals.

Is There Any Down Time?

Medical Microdermabrasion has been branded with the cosmetic nickname, the "lunch-time" peel, because it can be performed in a short period of time and patients can return immediately to their daily routine including applying makeup. Typically you will experience a slight irritation or wind-burnt sensation during treatment that can last for a few hours afterward. In addition, your skin usually takes on a pink hue that lasts an average for a day or two.

Consumer Beware...Not All Machines Are alike!

There are over a hundred different microdermabrasion machines that are available in the United States. These machines vary based on weight, the types of filters they use, what type of substance they use for sandblasting (some use baking soda or sodium chloride instead of crystals), the power of the machine, and its intended use (some are made for salons while some require a physicians license to operate).

If you are considering Microdermabrasion remember you get what you pay for. If a price sounds too good to be true, many times it is!

At our office we use only medical grade Microdermabrasion technology giving you the best results this procedure has to offer and more bang for your buck!

If you would like to schedule a FREE Body & Face Consultation, call my office today. Tips For Healthy Eating During The Holiday Season!

The time from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day has to be the hardest few weeks to stick to a healthy eating lifestyle or any diet for that matter. We are constantly tempted by sweets, treats and just way to much food in general. I would like to share a few tips with you that have helped me in the past to stay on track between now and the end of the year.

  1. Make sure you eat before you go to any holiday gathering. Try to make sure you are not hungry when
you arrive, or you will be much more tempted to overeat as well.

  2. Alternate higher calorie drinks like alcoholic beverages, eggnog or hot chocolate with water while you are at the holiday party. Drinks can have a lot of hidden calories in them, so watch out. Diet sodas are another good option.

  3. Fill your plate with some "good" foods first. Don't forget a nice plate of salad with a low fat dressing and some fresh fruit for dessert.

  4. Don't cut your favorite holiday treats completely out. If you don't allow yourself the occasional small indulgence, you will be much more likely to break down and binge on all those cookies and treats.

  5. Use the busy shopping season and burn some extra calories. If you are heading to the mall, park a little further away.
For extra motivation to get more walking in, consider wearing a pedometer. See www.walkingofftheweight.com for more information on walking and using a pedometer.

  6. Take some time to relax. The holidays can be a very stressful season if we let them. Work in some extra time just for you. Sit in front of the fire with a good book or your favorite magazine, go get your nails done, take a bath or go for a walk to calm you down and help you de-stress.

Above all, enjoy the holidays and remember they are not only about food, but more importantly about family spending quality time together. Have fun during this special time of the year and remember, it's okay to enjoy that occasional cookie.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Do You Want Silky Smooth, Flawless Skin?

healthy_skinHello again, this week's Looking Good, Feeling GreatTM tip. Let's face it, maintaining healthy looking, beautiful skin takes work! Even those picture perfect faces we see on the cover of glamour and beauty magazines have secret regimens to help them maintain their million dollar looks. But fortunately there are some surprisingly simple, inexpensive steps you can take to help give you the skin you want.

Here they are:

1. Let Your Skin "Breathe" At Night - After a long day of wearing makeup and exposure to environmental pollutants your skin can use a breather! So before retiring at night, deep-cleanse your pores...your skin will thank you in the morning.

2. Begin Your Day The Right Way - One beauty secret you can begin tomorrow morning that will help minimize facial lines is to shower in the morning instead of at night!
That's right! Humidity has been shown to hydrate skin therefore, by showering in the A.M. then moisturizing you can help maintain the hydrating effect and plump up your skin for several hours.

3. Spoil All Your Skin... Not Just Your Face - Most people forget that the skin below our chin also ages! So to have great looking skin all over, be sure to treat areas like the tops of your hands, as well as your neck and below!

4. Minimize Your Sun Exposure - I know if you've seen this tip once you've seen it a thousand times, but if there is one surefire, proven strategy for preventing premature aging of your skin, it's keeping your sun exposure to a minimum! With this in mind, here are some helpful hints when it comes to battling the sun's harmful rays: Use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 each and every day. Also, be sure to look for both UVB and UVA SPF protection (some key ingredients to look for are titanium dioxide, oxybenzone, microzined zinc oxide or octyl methoxycinnamate).

5. Eat Right, Rest and Drink Plenty of Water - This happy trio is the backbone to any beauty regimen and has been shown to have a favorable effect on your skin. Remember, what you put into your body is what you get out. Therefore, be sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night, make it a goal to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day and eat a well balanced, healthy diet!

6. Keep Stress To Minimum - This step is often easier said than done but when put into action has been found to keep stress related hormones (such as cortisol) that reek havoc on our body and skin at bay. As an added perk, by reducing your stress levels and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the day, you can help keep frown lines away!

7. Exercise Your Right To Exercise - That's right, nothing is better than exercise for maintaining strong healthy bones and
muscles while reducing stress and improving cardiovascular function. But besides these important benefits, exercise can also have a positive effect on our skin. You see, the increase in circulation and perspiration rate that occurs with exercise allows for an increase of nutrients to be delivered to your skin while allowing impurities and waste to be removed, leaving behind a healthier complexion!

So there they are, the 7 secrets to maintaining healthy looking, beautiful skin. If practiced daily, you will quickly see a noticeable change in your skin's appearance!

Caffeine - Should You Really Give it Up?

It may surprise you that the most commonly used drug in the world is caffeine. Caffeine can be a great pick me up that helps get you through the day. Plus, quitting caffeine can cause annoying side effects like headaches and nausea. However, while it may seem harmless enough; there are studies that suggest negative effects of excessive caffeine use. Before you make a decision to give up or cut back on caffeine, be sure you have all the information.

coffeeHaving been a college student, I know the negative effects of too much caffeine. While caffeine may help you get a jump start during the day or stay up all night studying, too much can make you nervous and shaky. It can also cause your heart to race and even affect your breathing. If you find yourself a bit jittery or shaky, caffeine may be the culprit. Plus, caffeine can make you feel more stressed during the day, even if you haven't had too much.

Your afternoon caffeine boost may be to blame for your insomnia. A lot of people think caffeine won't keep you up if you don't drink it before bedtime, but the stimulating effects of caffeine can last up to 6 hours. If you cut back your afternoon caffeine consumption, you may find yourself more rested in the morning.

Along with the side effects of caffeine; studies have suggested that there are more serious consequences from excessive use. Its stimulant properties can have negative effects on the heart including high blood pressure. Its diuretic effects may cause calcium loss, leading to osteoporosis. In addition, it's been suggested that caffeine can raise cholesterol, cause stomach irritation, and may even be linked to certain cancers. While most of this research is inconclusive and linked to high consumptions of caffeine, it's something to think about.

Caffeine has not only been linked to low birth weight, and miscarriages; some also suspect that it could prevent conception. If you're pregnant or trying to conceive, you should seriously consider giving up caffeine.

While research suggests that caffeine may be bad for you, quitting is ultimately a personal choice. If you feel you just can't get through the day without your coffee, try drink less throughout the day. You may feel withdrawal symptoms to begin with, but you'll be much better off in the long run.

If You're a Smoker, It's Time To Take The Challenge!

Did you know that smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States and is the biggest cause of disease and death in most western countries. It is the leading cause of many forms of cancer as well as heart disease and stroke.

Virtually every organ in the body is harmed by smoking which is primarily due to the thousands of chemicals (yes it is thousands) that are present in tobacco smoke. Many of those chemicals have been shown to cause cancer and many other health problems are caused or made worse due to smoking.

Illnesses that relate to breathing such as emphysema and bronchitis are caused or made worse by smoking. Emphysema is where the cigarette smoke causes the air sacs in the lungs to become damaged and this makes it difficult for the oxygen to get transported to the bloodstream. Obviously with a reduction in the circulation of oxygen throughout the body it will deteriorate at an increased rate. In addition to this damage to the air sacs in the lungs the airways can become inflamed from cigarette smoke causing chronic bronchitis.

When the combination of these two illnesses strike a person it can be an extremely unpleasant situation where the shortage of breath becomes increasingly difficult and ultimately results in early death. Smoking also increases the problem of hypertension (high blood pressure) and along with that smokers are at more risk of having a heart attack than those people who don't smoke.

The deterioration of the ability to breathe freely stops smokers from participating in sports at higher levels and ultimately this reduction in the ability to exercise results in poor health and for many people the sedentary life that they will tend to lead causes many more related health problems.

Each day of smoking is another step in the wrong direction where many parts of the body including the major organs are exposed to danger that can ultimately lead to death.  In light of all this (plus taking into consideration all that smoking does to your skin), the best advice I can give for looking good and feeling great at any age is..If you don't smoke, don't start now; if you do smoke, make Nov. 19th your stop smoking day!
